Five-Day Bible Reading Plan: What Kind of Friend Are You?
---
Day 1: Seen in the Storm
**Reading:** Psalm 34:18 — God is near to those whose hearts are broken and saves those crushed in spirit.
**Devotional:**
Every desperate situation feels isolating. The paralyzed man in Luke 5 could not move, could not advocate for himself, and could not change his circumstances through sheer willpower. Yet God saw him. Whatever impossible situation you are facing today — whether in your health, your marriage, your finances, or your family — God is not indifferent to your pain. He sees the burden you carry. He feels the weight of your hopelessness. Before any miracle comes, before any friend shows up, rest in this truth: you are not invisible to God. He sees you exactly where you are.
**Reflection:** What desperate situation are you carrying that you have not fully surrendered to God?
**Application:** Write down one burden you have been holding privately and commit it to prayer today, trusting that God sees what others cannot.
---
Day 2: The Danger of a Judgmental Spirit
**Reading:** Matthew 7:1-5 — A warning against judging others while remaining blind to one's own faults, calling believers to self-examination before correction.
**Devotional:**
The religious leaders in Luke 5 were physically present but spiritually absent. They were not there to encounter Jesus. They were there to evaluate, critique, and find fault. Their judgmental spirit made them an obstacle rather than a bridge. It is a sobering question to ask yourself: am I the obstacle, or am I the one helping others over the obstacle? A critical attitude does not just harm the person it is directed at — it poisons the atmosphere around you. People who are already struggling do not need another voice pointing out what is wrong. They need someone who will carry them forward.
**Reflection:** Have you ever allowed a judgmental attitude to make you an obstacle in someone else's journey toward healing or growth?
**Application:** Identify one relationship where criticism has become your default response. Choose one specific, encouraging word to offer that person today instead.
---
Day 3: Friendship That Acts
**Reading:** Proverbs 17:17 — A true friend loves at all times, and a brother is born specifically for times of adversity.
**Devotional:**
The four friends in Luke 5 did not schedule a meeting to discuss the paralyzed man's situation. They did not form a committee. They saw a need and they moved. Real friendship is not passive. It does not wait for a more convenient moment or a clearer path. It acts. These men carried their friend when he could not carry himself, and they refused to let a crowded room become the final answer. The door was blocked, so they found another way. True friendship costs something — time, energy, comfort, and pride. The question is not whether your friend needs you. The question is whether you are willing to pay the price.
**Reflection:** Is there someone in your life right now who needs to be carried but you have been waiting for a better time to step in?
**Application:** Reach out today to one person you know is struggling. Do not wait for them to ask. Simply show up.
---
Day 4: When the Door Is Blocked
**Reading:** Romans 5:3-5 — Suffering produces perseverance, perseverance produces character, and character produces hope that does not disappoint.
**Devotional:**
What would have happened if the four friends had looked at the crowd, looked at the door, and walked away? The man on the mat would have stayed on the mat. Obstacles are not stop signs — they are invitations to find another way. The roof was not in the original plan. It was the plan that emerged when the first plan failed. Some of the most powerful moments of faith in your life will come not when the path is clear, but when you refuse to quit after the first door closes. Perseverance in friendship, in faith, and in prayer is not stubbornness — it is trust that God is worth the effort.
**Reflection:** Where in your life have you stopped at a blocked door instead of looking for a roof to open?
**Application:** Revisit one prayer, one relationship, or one act of service you abandoned when it became difficult. Take one step forward in it today.
---
Day 5: Getting Others to Jesus
**Reading:** Galatians 6:2 — Believers are called to carry one another's burdens, fulfilling the law of Christ through mutual support and sacrifice.
**Devotional:**
The ultimate goal of the four friends was not simply to get their friend into the room. It was to get him to Jesus. Everything they did — the carrying, the climbing, the tearing open of the roof — was in service of that one purpose. As a friend, a spouse, a parent, a coworker, or a neighbor, your highest calling is not to fix people. It is to point them toward the One who can. Sometimes that means speaking truth. Sometimes it means sitting in silence. Sometimes it means tearing open a roof. Whatever it takes, the destination is always the same. Get them to Jesus. That is what kind of friend you are called to be.
**Reflection:** Who in your life needs you to be the kind of friend who does whatever it takes to point them toward Jesus?
**Application:** Pray specifically for one person by name today, asking God to show you one practical way you can carry them closer to Him this week.
